（The Japan Report）Conservative Thought

What do you think of when you hear the word "conservative"?
Does it mean people who believe in God? Do you think of people
who believe in the Bible?
Unfortunately, in Japan, these images do not apply to the word
"conservative" at all. Because in Japan, the word "conservative"
means someone who supports the Emperor System. So in Japan,
the concept of "conservatism" has nothing to do with the Bible
or faith.
Buddhism, the traditional religion of Japan, does not have the
concept of a creator. Shinto believes in multiple gods. They live
under a completely different set of values than Christians like us.
There are also many atheists in Japan. In Japan, Christians make
up only 1% of the population and are a minority. This has a
significant impact on the social climate in Japan.
When people who support the emperor form a "conservative layer"
in such a religious climate, what kind of country will that nation be?
It is a culture that is formed in such a nation, a culture that serves
the creature, not the Creator. It is a culture where obeying the
government is good and disobeying the government is bad.
In Japan, human rights are not considered to be God-given.
In Japan, human rights are considered to be rights granted by the
government. This is a striking example of the cultural difference
between Bible believers and non-believers.
However, it has not always been this way. If you look at Japanese
history, before the Meiji era, the concept of "conservatism" had
another meaning. It was the idea of taking up arms and protecting
one's family and property from the government. The holders of
such ideas were the Japanese samurai, who formed the Shogunate.
In Japan, however, weapons were taken away from the samurai,
and this idea of the samurai and the shogunate died out. When we
call ourselves "conservatives" now, we must not be like the
supporters of the Japanese emperor system. We must not serve a
government that is not God. We have an obligation to learn and
revive another kind of conservative thought, that of the samurai,
that of the shogunate. Only then will we be able to protect our
God-given human rights and pass them on to our descendants.

皆さんは「保守」という言葉を聞いて何を思い浮かべますか？神様を
信じている人のことでしょうか？聖書を信じている人を思い浮かべますか？
残念ながら、日本ではこれらのイメージは「保守」という言葉には全く
当てはまりません。なぜなら、日本では「保守」という言葉は「天皇制を
支持する人」を意味するからです。ですから、日本では「保守」という
概念は、聖書や信仰とは何の関係もありません。
日本の伝統宗教である仏教には、創造主という概念がありません。神道は
複数の神々を信じています。彼らは、私たちのようなクリスチャンとは
全く異なる価値観の下で生きています。また、日本には無神論者も多く
います。日本では、キリスト教徒は人口の1％しかおらず、少数派です。
このことは、日本の社会風土に大きな影響を与えています。
そのような宗教風土の中で、天皇を支持する人々が「保守層」を形成した
時、その国はどのような国になるのでしょうか。そのような国で形成される
のは、創造主ではなく、被造物に仕える文化です。それは、政府に従う
ことが善であり、政府に従わないことが悪であるという文化です。
日本では、人権は神から与えられたものとは考えられていません。日本
では、人権は政府から与えられた権利だと考えられています。これは、
聖書を信じる人と信じない人との間の文化的な違いを示す顕著な例です。
しかし、昔からこうだったわけではありません。日本の歴史を見ると、
明治以前は「保守」という概念には別の意味がありました。それは、武器を
持って自分の家族や財産を政府から守ろうとする思想です。そのような
思想を持っていたのは、幕府を形成した日本の武士です。
しかし、日本では武士から武器が取り上げられ、武士と幕府の思想は消滅
してしまいました。今、私たちが「保守」を名乗るとき、日本の天皇制
支持者のようになってはいけません。神ではない政府に仕えてはならないの
です。私たちには、もう一つの保守思想である武士の思想、幕府の思想を
学び、復活させる義務があります。そうして初めて、私たちは神から
与えられた人権を守り、子孫に引き継ぐことができるのです。
